Borrowing library books

Print books can be borrowed from your home library and from other partner libraries using our Inter-site loans service.

How many books can I borrow?

All students can borrow up to 15 items at a time. Loan periods are typically 7,14 or 28 days at a time.

Can I renew my books online?

Yes, you can renew your books online by logging into the my account page of the library catalogue.

If you have overdues, please contact your local library to renew them instead. A small fee may apply.

If I have overdue library items will the library contact me?

Each library sends overdue reminders (usually by email) once a book is past it's due date. You may receive a further reminder by post once it's been overdue for an extended period.

Can I view my reading history?

Once you've logged into the my account page, you can view all of of your reading history online. It includes all of the books you have borrowed throughout your entire course. Ideal when you've forgotten the name of a vital textbook! Librarians do not have access to this information, only you can see it.

Start searching for library books using the search box. You will be redirected to the main university catalogue containing all the information you need to find your chosen book.

Finding books in the library

When you search the library catalogue, beneath the book details you will get a list of the available copies.

Location: The UHI sites that have this particular book.

Shelfmark: The Dewey Decimal number indicating where the book can be found on the shelves.

Status: Indicates whether or not the book is currently available. If a date appears instead (eg. 07-09-15) it means the book is on loan and due back on that day.

Details: The number of days that a book can be borrowed for. Books can usually be renewed at least twice as long as they haven't been requested by another borrower.

Ask your librarian if you have any difficulty finding a book on the shelves.
