Resource Lists (Staff)

Introduction

The library encourages all academic staff to be involved in the creation and editing of module and unit Resource Lists. This is to ensure they are relevant, up-to-date, and provide a breadth of reading across each subject area.

This guide was originally designed for assisting with the creation of Module Resource Lists, but we are now able to offer Resource Lists in Talis for units at HN level and at FE level. Please speak to your subject librarian if you would like to set up lists in this way. It is possible to identify units as local to a particular Academic Partner, or they can be cross-network if required. The term Module is used throughout this guide, though this can be taken to include Units for HN and FE courses.

The process for creating or re-validating a new module requires a list to be submitted for review, which ensures the library has the correct print and electronic resources before the module starts. However, if you wish to add weekly reading during a module this is fine as long as it is for something that the university already subscribes to or is a freely available website. This guide will cover the following:

  • Creating and updating lists
  • Bookmarking resources
  • Creating sections (eg. weekly reading, sub-categories) and annotating list entries
  • Embedding entire lists or sections in the VLE.
  • List analytics
  • Requesting digitisations via Talis
  • The module (re)validation process

It will also look at exemplar lists and good practice. While we have attempted to make the guide as comprehensive as possible, please contact your subject librarian if you have any further queries or open a Servicedesk ticket and it will be passed to the most appropriate person. We can provide one-to-one or group training on request.

The Student View

Before creating or editing a list, it is useful to see the list features from a student perspective as it helps when making decisions about list sections, filters, annotations and reading intentions.
