Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to commonly asked questions and links to additional information.

Where do I get my library card?

When you enrol in a course you will automatically become a member of the library. Your student ID card is also your library card, so please remember to bring it when you are visiting the library and intending to borrow books.

How many books can I borrow?

All students and staff can borrow up to 15 books at a time.

How long can I borrow them for?

Loan periods are typically 7,14 or 28 days at a time and can be found next to each item in the library catalogue. A small number of books are for reference only to ensure there is always a copy available for use in the library.

due date list

Please note: Perth College issue books on slightly longer loans than the other sites. You will often be able to borrow a book for an entire semester, although it may be subject to recall if it is in high demand.

Will the library contact me about overdue items?

Each library sends overdue reminders (usually by email) once a book is past its due date. You may receive a further reminder by post once it's been overdue for an extended period.

Does the library fine for overdue items?

We are pleased to say that none of the libraries fine for overdue items. The only exception is at Perth who fine if an item has been recalled by the library but not returend within the 5 day grace period.

If a long overdue item reaches billing stage, you may be invoiced for the full cost replacing it along with a processing fee. This at the discretion of each partner library.

Can I renew books online?

Yes, you can renew your books online by logging into the my account page of the library catalogue or Multisearch..

If you have overdue items, please contact your local library to renew them instead, as they cannot be renewed online once they are late.

Can I view my reading history?

Once you've logged into the 'my account' page in Multisearch or libcat, you can view all of your reading history online. It includes all of the books you have borrowed throughout your entire course. Ideal when you've forgotten the name of a vital textbook! Library staff are not able to access this information, only you can see it.

Does the library have a self-issue service?

We have a self-issue app called MeeScan which is available at all of the main campuses, which allows you to borrow books using your own smartphone without the need to visit the issue desk. There are also iPad kiosks in the libraries which use the same app. Further details and links to the apps stores can be found in the MeeScan guide.

Lews Castle, Moray College and the Highland Health Science library also have traditional self-issue units for issuing and returning books.
