About NWH Stornoway - Library Facilities and Services

In Stornoway the Library can be found in C Block, level 1.

Staff are on hand to help you locate resources and make the best possible use of our library facilities and services.

  • As well as stocking an extensive range of books, their facilities and services include:
  • An area for quiet study, individual study
  • An area for quiet study, group study
  • A silent study room (no need to book)
  • Access to PCs (no need to book to use), including a table which is height adjustable
  • A wide range of online resources
  • A stationary table
  • A mindfulness & creative space area and a community jigsaw
  • Local study collections
  • A photocopier which does b&w and colour is located just opposite the Library entrance

Library staff are based in Stornoway throughout the academic year, please check our opening times.

There is also a Learning Resource Centre (LRC) in C Block, level 2, which accommodates a large open space area with desks and PCs for both group and individual study purposes. There is usually no need to book to use this space however it is sometimes used for teaching purposes. A photocopier is also located here (b&w only).

Monday - Friday: 8am to 5pm (Staff available 9am to 1pm)

Over the summer break, the Library space will be open for use but staff may be unavailable for periods of time. This may cause some disruption and delays for the processing of returns and loans.

External Users

Information for non UHI students or staff

Sconul Users:

Under the Sconul Access Scheme students and staff from other UK Universities are welcome to use our library facilities for study purposes. You do need to apply to use this scheme by completing an online Sconul application form. Depending on the level of access you are granted by your 'Home' institution, you may be able to borrow up to two books.  You will be responsible for their timely return and any  lost or damaged books will need to be paid for. You are welcome to bring your own laptop and wifi is available. We suggest you use Eduroam. You will not be permitted to use our PCs or access UHI electronic resources.

Members of the Local Community:

Members of the local community and visitors can come in and browse our books for free.  

It is appreciated if you let us know in advance of your initial visit and you MUST sign in at reception each time you visit.
