Using the Library Collections

Making sure you can access UHI's electronic and print collections

You must have a current Library Account to use the university's eResources. If you have a staff ID, simply contact your Academic Partner Library to ensure a library account has been set up - Student accounts are set up automatically. Searching for Library Resources

Finding the resources you need from the UHI's collections

To search the Library for Books, eBooks, journal articles and more, we recommend you use MULTISEARCH. You should always Login to get the best results - you will find the login button on the top right of the Multisearch screen. To search most of our sources at once - catalogue, databases, eJournals - use the first Multisearch tab. If you are only looking for books, use the Books and eBooks tab. Articles and more is for searching specifically for ejournal articles.

To search using the author, keyword, title or subject, click on Advanced Search on the Multisearch page and select from the drop down menu.

Print books located at any of the UHI Academic Partner Libraries are normally available for free loan within the university. Please ask the academic partner library where you are located for an Inter Site Loan.

You may also want to use Google Scholar to search for Journal articles. Full details in setting up Google Scholar to link with UHI resources and provide links, together with a guide to the pros and cons of user it, can be found in the Library Essentials guide

Inter Library Loans

Can't find what you need? - British Library Inter-Library Loans and Document Supply

If you are a member of staff involved in Research, or a student undertaking a Research Degree, we are normally able to source material for you that is not currently available through the university's collections. To use the  Inter-Library Loans or British Library Document supply services, please use this online form to make your requests.

We can supply

  • Journal articles (supplied digitally within a couple of days),
  • digitally supplied copies of book chapters
  • papers from conference proceedings
  • loan copies of print books.
  • If a book you have requested is available for purchase, we may go ahead and just buy a library copy, depending on cost.

Even if an item is not available from the British Library, we can make requests to other University and Specialist Libraries for loans or digital copies, subject to their discretion and in compliance with Copyright Law.
