Borrowing, renewing, reserving and returning books

Borrowing books

Our book collection is on the first floor. You may borrow up to 12 books at any one time. The loan period is 28 days and loans are automatically renewed twice unless the item is requested by another library user. As well as print books the Library service also provides access to a vast collection of eBooks which can be read online or downloaded. Our Library Search function covers all of the books held at SAMS plus all the UHI partner library collections. The catalogue provides links to the eBooks. Books for loan held by other UHI partner libraries may be borrowed through the inter-site loan scheme. To login into our Catalogue and most of our other Library resources your username is your ID number@uhi.ac.uk  (staff- sa0..@uhi.ac.uk) and your password is your usual SAMS/UHI password.

Inter-site loans

If you need to borrow a book(s) held at another UHI partner library you can use the 'hold' option in the catalogue pages/search results page. Alternatively, email SAMSLibrary@sams.ac.uk with the book details and we will request the books on your behalf. If an eBook is available partner libraries will not post you a print copy unless there are special circumstances and this has been agreed by Student Services e.g. if you are dyslexic.

Renewing books

Books loans are for 28 days and will renew twice automatically giving a period of 3 months before you are asked to return the books. Thereafter if you want the book for longer please speak to the librarian or email SAMSLibrary@sams.ac.uk. You may be asked to return a book after the initial 28 days if it is requested by another library user.

Reserving books

SAMS students or staff may reserve a book that is already out on loan (as long as it is a book from our Library) by sending an email to SAMSLibrary@sams.ac.uk and quoting the details of the book. Please note reserved books will only be held for a limited number of days before going back into circulation. You will be sent an email when books are available for collection.

Book return

You will receive an automatic email when books are due to be returned. If you no longer require a book please return it as soon as possible to make it available for other people to borrow. If you need the book longer you can usually renew it (if it is not reserved).

There is a Book Return box located in the Sheina Marshall Building study room.  Books can be returned there, or to the shelves by the i-pad just inside the 1st floor library door.

If you have books to by post, please send them back (free of charge up to 2kg) using this address:
