You may notice that Cite Them Right Online has now moved to the 13th edition. This update was made by the publishers, and the 12th edition is no longer available on the website.

What this means for students

  • Some students will still be using the 12th edition print book while others will be following the 13th edition online guidance.
  • The differences are minor (e.g. punctuation, URLs/DOIs, new examples for digital sources) and news sources added to include AI etc.

Marking guidance for 2025/26

  • Academics will accept both the 12th and 13th edition styles in assignments during this academic year.
  • Students will not be penalised for following either edition, provided their referencing is clear, accurate, and consistent.
  • From 2026/27 onwards, all students will be expected to follow the 13th edition.

Support

  • The Library has published a short FAQ explaining the changes and updated the main Referencing Libguide.
  • The 13th edition of the eBook is available in Library Search, along with print copy availability at the partner libraries.
  • The library team are working with other third-party vendors to ensure relevant tools are updated asap. Refworks anticipate support for the 13th edition by the end of September 2025.
  • If you are considering purchasing a copy of the textbook, please ensure it is the 13th edition.

If you have any queries, please contact your module leader, or the library either in-person or by opening a ticket on Servicedesk.
